Game NotesDespite being the dominant side for long periods, Kiltimagh stumbled over the line in this County Intermediate Championship clash in Gilmartin Park. The reason Ardnaree were still in the game in the final quarter was Kiltimagh’s concession of 3
goals, all at points when Kiltimagh were pulling away on the scoreboard. Despite Ardnaree being reduced to 14 men from midway through the first half, Kiltimagh did not take advantage of this numerical advantage.
Similar to the opening round game against Kilmaine, Kiltimagh started well and dominated the first quarter. Ardnaree opened the scoring but Kiltimagh levelled with a Ronan Malee free. A second Ardnaree point edged them ahead but again Malee levelled matters. Cillian Finn then kicked 3 points without reply but Ardnaree did pull one back right on the first half water break and Kiltimagh led by 0-5 to 0-3 at that stage. Cillian Finn edged Kiltimagh further ahead with a great point after the resumption and then another Malee free moved Kiltimagh 0-7 to 0-3 ahead. However, Ardnaree struck for their first goal shortly after this and that took the momentum out of Kiltimagh’s progress. Brian Gallagher did steady the ship with a point before half time and that saw Kiltimagh lead 0-8 to 1-3 at the short whistle. Kiltimagh started the second half nervously and they were soon rocked back on their heels by a second Ardnaree goal. Kiltimagh were caught napping leaving the Ardnaree full forward on his own on a one to one with Jamie McNicholas. He rounded Jamie and stuck the ball into the empty net. Kiltimagh were struggling for scores at this point and the next score came from midfield when Sean Walsh kicked over to level matters. Ardaree pointed again to put their noses in front. Shortly
afterwards Eoghan Lavin and Conor Malee entered the fray and this had the effect of injecting some urgency into the Kiltimagh attack. Mallee immediately kicked a point to level up matters and then an Eoghan Lavin free broke loose in the square and Liam Lydon narrowly missed the goal as his shot fizzed over the bar to put Kiltimagh
ahead again. Kiltimagh led 0-11 to 2-4 as the game reached the second water break. Kiltimagh again dominated matters after this water break and Mallee continued to show the value of his introduction when he kicked the next 2 points to move Kiltimagh 3 points ahead and it looked like they were going to close out the game. However, they allowed Ardnaree to break upfield and move the ball to the corner forward who buried the ball to the Kiltimagh net to level matters once again. It was now all to play for and credit to the Kiltimagh lads, they didn’t panic and worked the
ball up for Tomas Keegan to kick a great point and edge them ahead. Kiltimagh then managed to keep possession to run down the clock and finish up as winners by the narrowest of margins.
Kiltimagh live on and they now move on to the final round of games on the weekend of the 16th October next with a win over Louisburgh being the absolute minimum required to progress to the quarter finals.
